His ability to play the part isn’t in doubt. And for anyone who’s seen him on Arrow, the guy is built more like a superhero than anyone else in the cast, despite rarely wearing a costume. And as for his last name? Given his involvement with ARGUS, there are probably a half dozen ways that could be explained away, like perhaps with some imminent threat to his family, he has to tweak his identity and become John Stewart.Īll this is to say I don’t think lore is the biggest obstacle in getting Ramsey to wear the ring. Also, I swear I’ve heard Diggle say he was from Detroit at one point (the actor, David Ramsey, actually is).
Fans points to these items as being different enough from Diggle where the lore wouldn’t work, but I have a hunch the show would probably forgive the architect part, and Special Forces could easily stand-in for the Marines. There have been a few different versions of the character over the years, but he’s originally from Detroit, is an architect, and served in the Marines. Stewart is obviously more fleshed out, having been a part of the DC universe since his first appearance early ‘70s, but he really broke out in the ‘90s when he assumed the Green Lantern mantle from Hal Jordan. But past that, he’s something of a blank slate. We know some details about his past, that he served in Afghanistan in the Special Forces before being hired as Oliver Queen’s bodyguard, and that his brother was killed by Deadshot. The good news is that Diggle was an entirely original creation for Arrow, and has no rooted backstory in the comics as a separate character. So how would Diggle transform into Stewart? It would certainly require a touch of lore-bending. Ramsey goes on to say that he’d be honored to play the character if this was a road the show decided to take, but he understands the challenges it would pose integrating cosmic-level superpowers into a grounded-in-reality show like Arrow, which so far has only dabbled in a few “unreal” power scenarios including villains with super strength and impenetrable skin, or crossovers with Barry Allen’s Flash, the super-speedster.
